January Construction Report by Chris Herndon

 Dear Neighbors,

We ran into some hurdles in January. We made about as much progress as there was snow on the ground here. But sometimes you have to slow down before you speed up!

See the long metal beam along the underside of the roof?

Well, turns out there was lead on them which prevented the welders from doing what they needed to do.

As some of you may know, lead exposure is not a good thing. It’s typically found in older buildings and comes from lead-based paint and old plumbing. When these materials degrade or are disturbed during renovations, lead dust and particles can contaminate the air, water, and surfaces within the building. This exposure is unhealthy because lead is a toxic metal that can cause a range of health issues, from cognitive impairments and developmental delays in children, to cardiovascular and kidney problems in adults.

To remediate the lead, our General Contractor, Flannery Construction stepped in to save the day and keep us on schedule. Using specialized, gun-like tools, they began the very tedious work of removing the lead-based paint from the beams to make it safe for the welders to complete their work.

Lead on a project is sort of like that tiny yet uncomfortable rock inside your shoe. It brings you to a stop while you remove it.

The welders were able to complete their work. Double the scissor lifts, double the fun!

What’s coming up next?

  • Framing of the mezzanine level (the structural support)

  • Mezzanine level decking (to support the floors)

  • Elevator / Lift shaft

  • Aesthetics / Finishes in some areas (paint, woodwork, bathroom)

Thanks again for your support and patience!
